When it takes 12 years and a million bucks to make, it has
to be something worth a watch. Built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, the Jama
Masjid is located in a popular part of Delhi, one that is famous for its hustle
and bustle- Chandni Chowk.
I happened to see the beauty of Masjid-i Jahān-Numā,
or the Jama Masjid as it is popularly known, on a moderately busy Sunday
morning. The best time to visit this place is an early hour, but you would not
find yourself lonely, for the commotion of the city finds its way here as well.
Signs find their way all over the place; women cannot enter
after sunset, shoes are strictly not allowed, you would require tickets to get
in, and of course pay a (hefty!) amount if you happen to be carrying a camera.
Textures and carvings are an integral part of the monument, as are writings in Persian and Arabic art.
Complete with minarets and tombs, you can see the use of similar sandstone and marble as in many other Mughal architectures. It is also said to carry scribbling from the Quran along with the ornate carvings
Go to Jama Masjid, not only for the view and the beauty, but also because such a work of art is worth your exploration.
Oh, and don't forget the tickets!
